Nursing
Nursing is a Medical Profession which deals with the Primary Health Care and focuses on the care of Patients or those who are undergoing Medical Treatment. Nursing was introduced in India after the influence of Florence Nightingale who served for the Indian Army with great concern and care. She had a knowledge of Medical conditions in Indian Army.
The Service offered by the front-line warriors during the outbreak of the Corona Virus has raised the prominence of the Nursing Profession. A Nurse provides dedicated Medical Services and helps patients to recover. Nursing Education is one of the foremost opportunities for Intermediate Students. Its specialty is getting Employment immediately after the completion of the course. Students can join ANM, GNM, B.Sc Nursing courses after Intermediate. They can go further towards Job/ Higher Education depending on their Interest. Nurses are employed in Public and Private Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Health Centres, Educational Institutions, Old age Homes, Corporate Entities, and even Abroad too!
A Nursing course can be selected according to the group studied in Intermediate. All groups have the opportunity to join ANM and GNM courses. Examinations are conducted under the auspices of the Nursing Examination Board for those who have studied these. Only BiPC students have access to the B.Sc Nursing course. This course is conducted under the auspices of the respective university. You can also get Employment with ANM course. However, GNM and B.Sc Nursing are leading the way. Most Colleges offer courses for Women only. Male Nursing Education is limited. Those enrolling in ANM, GNM, B.Sc Nursing courses must have completed 17 years of age by December 31 of that year.
Types of Courses:
B.Sc Nursing:
This is the most preferred course in Nursing Education. Candidates who have passed Biology, Physics and Chemistry with 45% marks in Inter can apply. The course duration is 4 Years. The course is offered by National Institutions as well as Government and Private colleges in the Telugu States. Seats in State Level Institutions are available on Merit of Intermediate Marks. National Level Institutes offer opportunity with Entrance Test. After B.Sc Nursing, students can opt to do Post Basic B.Sc Nursing, then M.Sc Nursing and then Ph.D.
General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM):
The course duration is 3 Years. Intermediate students from all Groups are eligible. Various Colleges in Telugu States also offers this course. Students can get an opportunity to join the course with the merit of Intermediate marks. Those who complete this can study B.Sc Nursing course on a regular basis for a period of 2 Years. Or they can complete three years of course from IGNOU in Distance Education while working in any company. After that they can enroll in a Post Basic Diploma or M.Sc. Nursing. If they are interested, they can do a Ph.D in Nursing too.
Auxiliary Nurse Midwife/ Health Worker (ANM):
This course duration is 2 Years. Most of the Colleges in Telugu States offer this Course. One can get Direct Admission into ANM course. After the completion of ANM course, one can complete GNM, then Post Basic B.Sc Nursing and then M.Sc Nursing courses, respectively. Those who complete the ANM course will perform their duties at the Primary Health Centers and their Sub- centers (Health Sub-Centers). Vaccination of Infants, Nutrition of Postpartum Women, Supplementation, Promotion of Natural Insemination, Ensuring Government Schemes, etc., are part of their duties. They can also perform basic services in Private Hospitals.
Post basic Diploma in Nursing:
Those who want to provide specialized services in any field can join Post Basic Diploma Courses with one year duration after BSc Nursing. Cardio Thoracic, Critical Care, Midwifery, Neuroscience, Oncology, Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation, Psychiatric, Neonatal, Operation Room, Emergency and Disaster, Ophthalmic, TB, Leprosy, etc. are the options.
M.Sc. Nursing:
Specialties include Community Health Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing, etc. The duration of the courses is two years. Those who have completed BSc Nursing and Post Basic BSc Nursing courses can choose the specialization of their choice. The services can then be provided in the relevant departments.

Opportunities in our country:
According to the World Health Organization, there should be atleast 30 Nurses for every 10,000 people. According to the Union Ministry of Health, there are only 17 Nurses per ten thousand in our country. Experts in the field say that there are less than that. By 2030, it is estimated that the world needs the services of 60 million Nurses. Of this, 20 lakh people are needed to meet the needs of our country alone. Those who have a Sense of Service, Hardworking ethos, Patience, Professionalism and Skills can reach higher positions in a short period of time.
Those who have completed B.Sc Nursing and GNM courses are getting opportunities in the Public, Private and Corporate sectors with significant salaries. Those enrolled in Central Government Hospitals, Railways, and other Central Institutions can receive Rs. 75,000 from the first month with a base salary of Rs. 44,900. They are recruited directly into the rank of Lieutenant in the Army and are paid a salary of over Rs. 1 Lakh. Nurse posts are being filled to provide services in Government hospitals, Health centers, and Welfare Homes in the Telugu States. They get an initial basic salary of over Rs. 40,000 from the first month, with DA, HRA, and other allowances. Corporate Hospitals initially offer a salary of Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 25,000 for B.Sc Nursing graduates. PG graduates can provide specialized services at Corporate Multispecialty Medical Departments with attractive salaries. The Teaching field can also be selected if interested in Teaching.
Opportunities Abroad:
Well- trained Nurses also have a wide range of opportunities Abroad. Those who are proficient in the subject and proficient in English can receive large sums of money in countries such as the US, Canada, Singapore, the Gulf, the Middle East, etc,. Candidates seeking employment abroad should qualify for the examinations conducted by the respective countries. A score on the English Proficiency Test (TOEFL or IELTS) for the US is required to pass the National Council Licensing Examination - Registered Nurse (NCLEX - RN). Career aspirants in Canada must appear for the Canadian Registered Nurses Exam (CRNE), the Dubai Health Authority's Prometric Exam for working in Dubai, and the Supreme Council of Health Exam for Qatar. Some countries hire people with 2- 3 Years of experience through Interviews.
