Social Work

Social Work

We are living in a society where it is plagued by many problems such as Poverty, Illness, Illiteracy, Unemployment, Malnutrition, Child labour, etc,. We see a lot of people suffering from these issues on roadsides on a daily basis. At that time, we pity them and will give them some food or money. But it is just a temporary solution for that situation. If you want to make a difference in this situation, doing social service is a great way to do that. Although governments and many organizations around the world are working to help the people who are in need, there are many NGO's also working their fullest to serve the needy people of various age groups from infants to senior citizens. The people who work in these NGO's are known as social workers. The main duty of social workers is to mobilize the people and request them to help those who are in need.

Those who are interested in doing social service and have the capability to understand social issues can excel in a social service course. From individuals to families and even organizations need the services of social workers. There are many employment opportunities present in NGOs, Government agencies, Human resources departments, Counselling centres, etc,. for those who complete the social service course. As per the current Government rules, having a social responsibility division is mandatory for all commercial enterprises. Therefore, all companies have set up a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) division and a considerable amount of money from their profits is being spent on the welfare of needy people. Those who complete social service courses will have the opportunity to work in these corporate companies.

Career Opportunities:

Every organization or NGO focuses on improving a section of deprived people such as Infants, old age people, youth, etc,. It is important to know what department you are interested in working in and the required specialization course must be completed so that you can understand what to do to satisfy the needs of that section. You can get employment opportunities by sharing your ideas with relevant organizations that are helpful in helping the poor. Organizations serving in the relevant department should pay attention to the programs by providing Volunteer services, completing Internships at related organizations, etc,.

These are the Courses ...

The first Master of Social Work (MSW) course in the country was started in 1936 at the Dorabji Tata School of Social Work (now the Tata Institute of Social Sciences). Currently, social work courses are taught in about 300 universities and colleges. These are offered at PG level under as MA, MSW degrees depending on the organisation. Specializations are available at some organisations. Students studied at reputed National institutes can find employment opportunities through their own campus placements. However, those who want a career just to make money do not have to choose social work. The course is apt for those who are determined to bring a significant change in society.

You can pursue a social work course from Under Graduation stage. Social work, Sociology and Psychology are the three subjects and you can choose any combination of these three subjects. Some companies offer the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) course. However, social work UG studies are available in a few institutions. This course is being implemented at PG level in most universities. You can join PG courses with any degree qualification. There is no requirement to read social work in UG for this. Those who have completed PG courses are getting more opportunities.

Criminology and Justice, Community health, Mental health, Urban development, Psychiatric social work, Community development, Correctional administration, Tribal studies and action, Disabled studies and action, Livelihood and Social Entrepreneurship, Children and Family issues, etc,. are the courses available at PG level.
