Hindi Diwas is observed every year on September 14 to promote the language and its usage across the nation. Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and the third most spoken language worldwide. 

♦ On 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India officially recognized Hindi as one of the country’s official languages. The first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to observe September 14 as Hindi Diwas. The celebration of Hindi Diwas officially started in 1953. 

♦ World Hindi Day is celebrated all over the world on 10 January, thus Hindi Day is celebrated twice in India.

♦ International Day of Police Cooperation is observed every year on September 7. This was marked for the first time in 2023. This day recognizes the essential work of the world’s law enforcement community in global security. It was designated in the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Police Cooperation adopted on 16 December 2022.

♦ Coinciding with the centenary of INTERPOL, as the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC) was created on September 7, 1923, the United Nations marked the International Day of Police Cooperation for the first time in 2023.

♦ Teachers Day is celebrated every year in India on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. It happens since 1962. He was born on 1888 and died on 17 April 1975. 

♦ Radhakrishnan served as first Vice President (1952 - 62) and second President (1962 - 67) of India.

♦ He got Bharat Ratna in 1954 and Templeton Prize in 1975.

International Day Of Remembrance of And Tribute To Victims Of Terrorism is observed annually on 21 August to pay tribute to honour and pay tribute to victims of terrorism to stand by them. The UN General Assembly established this day in 2017. 

♦ The word terrorism was first used to describe the "Regime de la Terreur" (the Reign of Terror) in France in the last decade of the 18th century.

♦ World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13 to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourage people to register as organ donors. The first successful kidney transplant occurring in 1954. Ronald Lee Herrick was the first person to donate his organ to his twin brother, and Dr Joseph Murray was the doctor who carried out this successful organ transplantation process.

♦ In 2023, the India Organ Donation Day was shifted to August 3, commemorating India’s first successful deceased-donor heart transplant on August 3, 1994.

♦ Quit India Movement Day is observed every year on August 8 to commemorate the quit India movement which steered India towards its eventual independence from British colonial rule. The movement was also known as the Bharat Chhodo Andolan. It was launched by Mahatma Gandhi in August 1942 during the session of the All India Congress Committee in Bombay. Gandhi's clarion call "Do or Die" resonated nationwide.

The National Javelin Day is observed every year on August 7 in India to commemorate Neeraj Chopra's historic gold medal during the Tokyo Olympics.  In 2021 Chopra hurled javelin at a distance of 87.58m during the men's Javelin Throw final of the Tokyo Games to win the gold medal. Chopra scripted history as it was India's first-ever gold medal in Track and Field events in Olympics.

The first Handloom Day was celebrated in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai. ♦ Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to remember the tragic event of World War II in 1945 when the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan’s Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the United States deployed an atomic bomb named "Little Boy" over Hiroshima, causing unprecedented destruction and loss of life. The explosion resulted in the deaths of an estimated 140,000 people by the end of that year due to the blast and subsequent radiation exposure.

♦ This day aims to educate people about the immense harm caused by nuclear weapons. It also serves as a tribute to the lives lost and the survivors who endured immense suffering.

♦ World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and its impact on global health. This date was chosen to honor the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the Nobel Laureate who discovered the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the 1960s and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for it. Initially celebrated on May 19, the date was moved to July 28 in 2010. The first community-driven World Hepatitis Day was organized in 2008 by the World Hepatitis Alliance, which was established in 2007.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) foundation day


♦ The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) foundation day is observed every year on July 27 to commemorate the formation of the central force on this day in 1939. Originally constituted as the Crown Representative Police in 1939, CRPF was the internal combat force in India. The force was renamed as CRPF by an Act of Parliament passed on 28 December 1949.

♦ The CRPF plays a major role during disasters in the country or when any unforeseen accidents happen.

Kargil Vijay Diwas

♦ Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorates the success of Operation Vijay in 1999.  In this operation, the Indian Armed Forces reclaimed the territories in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir that had been infiltrated by Pakistani soldiers and militants. 2024 is the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. On this occasion, the Department of Posts has released a commemorative postage stamp at Dras, Kargil in Ladakh.

♦ National Income Tax Day is observed every year on July 24 to honours the establishment of income tax by Sir James Wilson in 1860. The income tax day or Aaykar Diwas was celebrated for the first time on July 2010 to acknowledge 150 years of income tax in India. National Broadcasting Day

National Broadcasting Day is observed every year in India on July 23. On July 23, 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) came into existence as the country’s first radio company. This was followed by the launch of All India Radio (AIR) in April 1930 as the Indian Broadcasting Service.

By the time of India’s independence in 1947, the country had six AIR radio stations in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow and Tiruchirappalli. The name of AIR was changed to Akashvani in 1956. Today, AIR has 262 radio stations that broadcast nearly 650 news bulletins in 90 languages.

♦ World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on 31 May to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco. The World Health Organisation created this day in 1987 to prevent tobacco-related deaths and diseases.

♦ According to the World Health Organisation, tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year, including an estimated 1.3 million non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) is observed every year in India on March 23 in remembrance of the freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar brave martyrs of the nation.

Ordnance Factories Day

Ordnance Factories Day is observed every year on March 18 to commemorate the day when Ordnance Factory in Cossipore, Kolkata was formed in 1787. In 1775, the Board of Ordnance was formed in Fort William, Kolkata. In 1787, a gunpowder factory was formed in Ishapore and a gun carriage factory was formed in Cossipore, Kolkata. Indian Coast Guard Day is observed every year on February 1. This year (2024), the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated its 48th Raising Day. It was established in 1977 to prevent the sea-borne smuggling of goods that hampered the economy. 

♦ On August 18, 1978, the Parliament announced that the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Day would be celebrated on February 1.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Non-Resident Indian - NRI Day) is celebrated on January 9. Vijay Diwas

♦ Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on December 16 to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war.

♦ The Border Security Force (BSF) held a first-ever "Vijay Diwas Parade" in New Delhi on 16 December 2023.

♦ Earlier, respective battalions and units held their own events to pay tributes to the personnel who laid down their lives during the 1971 war.

 National Energy Conservation Day is observed every year in India on December 14 to raise public awareness about the value of energy efficiency and conservation.

 On December 14, 1991, the National Energy Conservation Awards were given to the winners for the first time. Since then, the day has been marked as the National Energy Conservation Day. 

 The National Energy Conservation Day and the Awards are being organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under Ministry of Power, Government of India, which is mandated as per the Energy Conservation Act 2001, to regulate and promote energy efficiency and its conservation in India.

Indian Coast Guard celebrates its 46th Raising Day

Indian Coast Guard is celebrating its 46th Raising Day. From just seven surface platforms in 1978, the Indian Coast Guard, (ICG) has grown into a formidable force with 158 ships and 70 aircraft in its inventory. It is likely to achieve targeted force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025. As the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, it has played a significant role in securing the Indian coasts and enforcing regulations in the maritime zones of India. The ICG has saved over one thousand two hundred lives at sea in the last one year and more than 11 thousand since its inception.

One of the primary duties of the Indian Coast Guard is prevention of smuggling through maritime routes in its area of responsibility. In the last one year, it has seized drugs and contraband worth nearly four thousand crore rupees.
