Indian shuttler Suhas Yathiraj clinched the silver in the men’s singles badminton SL4 class at the Paris 2024 Paralympics on 2 September 2024. This is his second successive Paralympics silver medal. He won a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Indian para-athletes have secured a record-breaking total of 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This achievement surpasses the country’s best 19 medals tally at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, marking a new era in Indian para-sports.
A total of 84 Indian para-athletes participated across 12 disciplines, an increase from the nine disciplines in Tokyo 2020. New events for India at the Paris Games included paracycling, para rowing, and blind judo.

This marks the first-ever gold medal in the men's javelin F41 category. China's Sun Pengxiang settled for a silver with a best throw of 44.72m. Wildan Nukhailawi of Iraq won the bronze medal with 40.46m.
♦ Navdeep’s medal-winning throw eclipsed the previous Paralympic record of 47.13m, set by Sun Pengxiang of the People’s Republic of China at Tokyo 2020.

Posted Date: September 7, 2024♦ Indian judoka Kapil Parmar secured a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics on 5 September 2024. He defeated Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira in the men’s -60kg J1 contest. Kapil became the first Indian to win a Paralympic medal in judo.
♦ Athletes with vision impairment are classified under the J1 category. They can see much less detail than someone with normal vision.
♦ The judo bronze on Thursday was India’s 25th medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
♦ Kapil hails from Shivor village in Madhya Pradesh. When he was a child, he accidentally touched an open wire near a water pump while playing in the fields, suffering a severe electric shock. The incident affected Kapil's vision.

He hurled the club to a distance of 34.92m to claim the top spot. His compatriot Pranav Soorma clinched the silver with a throw of 34.59m. Serbia's Filip Graovac bagged the bronze, courtesy of a 34.18m throw.
♦ Dharambir is the fifth Indian to have won gold while Soorma is India's ninth silver medallist in Paris.
♦ Dharambir was left paralysed from the waist down. He had earlier won silver at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in early 2022.
♦ Soorma was 16 when when a cement sheet fell on his head, causing a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. His achievements include a silver medal at the 2019 Beijing Grand Prix, a gold medal at the Serbia Open 2023, and both gold and silver medals at the Tunisia Grand Prix 2022. At the Asian Para Games 2023, Pranav set a record with a 30.01m throw in the men's club throw F51 event, earning a gold medal.

♦ Harvinder became the first and only Indian archer to clinch a gold medal at the Paralympics.
♦ Harvinder clinched a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. He won a gold medal in the men’s individual recurve open event at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. In 2023, Harvinder was a part of the team which won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles recurve event at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.
♦ Harvinder hails from Kaithal, Haryana, had dengue when he was just one-and-half years old and a local doctor administered him an injection that had an adverse effect and his legs stopped working properly.

She became the first intellectually impaired Indian athlete to win a Paralympic medal. Ukraine’s Yulia Shuliar (55.16s) and Turkiye's Ayser Onder (55.23s) clinched the gold, and silver medals respectively.
♦ The T20 class is reserved for athletes with intellectual impairments. Deepthi is India’s first-ever athlete in this category to compete at the Paralympic Games, faces cognitive challenges that affect her communication and understanding skills.

He became the first Indian male para-athlete to defend his title in the Paralympics. He achieved the feat with a new Paralympic record of 70.59m at the Stade de France.
♦ He also clinched the gold medal in Tokyo in 2020. Sumit also holds the world record of 73.29 in the F64 class.
♦ India’s badminton player, Nitesh Kumar won a gold medal at the Paris Paralympics on 2 September 2024. He defeated Daniel Bethell of Great Britain in the men's singles SL3 final.
♦ This is India's second gold at the Paris Paralympics. Shooter Avani Lekhra had previously captured gold in the women’s 10m air rifle event.
♦ SL3 is a classification for players who have moderate mobility challenges on one side of their body, both legs or due to limb absence.
♦ This is India's third Paralympic medal in badminton. All of India's badminton medals at the Paralympics have been gold. In the 2020 Tokyo Games, Pramod Bhagat (SL3) and Krishna Nagar (SH6) clinched top podiums.
♦ Hockey India announced that the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 hockey tournament will be hosted in Rajgir, Bihar, from November 11-20. The tournament will take place at the newly constructed Rajgir Hockey Stadium. Teams from China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand will participate in this event.
♦ The 2023 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy was also played in India in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The Indian women’s hockey team beat Japan 4-0 in the final at the Jaipal Singh Stadium to win their second Women’s Asian Champions Trophy hockey title. The People’s Republic of China finished third.
♦ The Republic of Korea, the inaugural Women’s Asian Champions Trophy winners, are a record three-time champions (2010, 2011 and 2018). India and Japan have won two titles each. The Indian team also made the final in the 2013 and 2018 editions.
♦ Meanwhile, the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 men’s hockey tournament is set to start on September 8 in Hulunbuir, the People’s Republic of China.
♦ Preethi Pal bagged a bronze in the women’s 200 T35 class at Paris 2024 Paralympics on 1 September 2024. She clocked a personal best timing of 30.01s in the final to take the third position. She had won a bronze in the women’s 100m T35 class earlier for India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in a track event. She became the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic medals in track and field events.
♦ Xia Zhou and Guo Qianqian of the People’s Republic of China bagged the gold and silver medal, respectively, in the 200m event. Xia Zhou completed the race in 28.15s while Guo Qianqian registered a personal best of 29.09s.
♦ India’s Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 class at the Paris 2024 Paralympics on 1 September 2024. He soared to a height of 2.04m in the final. USA’s Roderick Townsend won the gold medal with a score of 2.12m and Georgii Margiev settled for bronze with a jump of 2.00m.
♦ This was Nishad Kumar’s second Paralympic medal. He won the silver medal at Tokyo 2020 with a clearance of 2.06m behind Townsend back then as well.
