ISSF World Cup Final 2024

♦ India’s Akhil Sheoran clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions shooting event at the ISSF World Cup Final 2024 in New Delhi on 16 October 2024. He finished third after shooting 452.6 across kneeling, prone and standing positions. Hungary’s Istvan Peni (465.3) and Czechia’s Jiri Privratsky (464.2) won the gold and silver medals, respectively.

All India Football Federation

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) was conferred with the prestigious President’s Recognition Award for Grassroots Football (Silver) during the AFC Annual Awards in Seoul. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey accepted the award on behalf of the federation.
 Since the preceding AFC Annual Awards in Doha last year, when it was handed the bronze award, the AIFF has been endorsed with a silver-level membership under the AFC Grassroots Charter.
The AIFF has been credited for its strong commitment towards grassroots development and establishing long-term sustainable programmes, facilitating regional involvement, and strong partnerships with various stakeholders across the country.

Chirag Chikkara

 Chirag Chikkara won the gold medal at U23 World Wrestling in Tirana, Albania on 28 October 2024. He defeated Abdymalik Karachov of Kyrgyzstan in the men's freestyle 57kg category in the final. 

He is the second Indian man, after Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat, to win gold at the U23 Championships. Sehrawat had achieved the feat in the same category in the 2022 edition.

While Reetika Hooda had become the first Indian woman to bag a gold at the tournament when she won in the 76kg category last year (2023).

Ravi Kumar Dahiya had also won a silver in the U23 World Championships in 2018.

Indian mens Football team

Indian men’s football team climbed one place to 125th in the latest FIFA rankings. India’s points tally has improved to 1133.78, contributing to their rise in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) standings, where they are now ranked 22nd, just ahead of Vietnam.

 World champion Argentina maintains its top spot with 1883.5 points, while France, European champion Spain and England occupy the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. Five-time world champion Brazil occupies fifth place.

Commonwealth Games

 The organisers of the 2026 edition of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games confirmed on 22 October 2024 that badminton, cricket, hockey, squash, table tennis, and wrestling were excluded from the Games' programme. 

 The disciplines that will be part of Glasgow Games are athletics and para-athletics (track & field), swimming and para-swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, and 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball.

 The 2026 edition, featuring only 10 sports and roughly 3,000 athletes, will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The Games will take place across four venues - Scotstoun stadium, Tollcross International swimming centre, Emirates arena - including the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Glasgow will be CWG ‘lite’ since the previous edition in Birmingham had 19 sports and almost 5,000 athletes.

 At the 2022 CWG, India had won 61 medals, including 22 gold. Wrestling (12), weightlifting (10), athletics (8), boxing and table tennis (7 each) contributed the most to the overall tally.

 Hockey had been a part of CWG since 1998 and India have been the second-best team in the Games' history, with the men and women's teams securing six medals - including one gold, four silver and a bronze. In Birmingham, Indian men finished second while the women settled for bronze.

Deepika Kumari

 Indian archer Deepika Kumari won the silver medal in the Archery World Cup final at Tlaxcala, Mexico on 21 October 2024. She lost the match with a 0-6 against Chinese Li Jiaman. 

 This is her sixth World Cup medal. Deepika captured silver medals in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2024. She also won a bronze medal in 2018.

 Dola Banerjee remains the only Indian to have won a gold in the World Cup Final, having topped the podium in Dubai 2007.

New Zealand clinched the Womens T20 World Cup

New Zealand clinched the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 title on 20 October 2024. They defeated South Africa by 32 runs in the final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.  It was New Zealand's maiden T20 World Cup title, men's and women's both. 

♦ This was the Kiwis’ third-ever final of the showpiece event and after two successful attempts, they finally have their hand on the coveted trophy.

♦ The champions New Zealand got a cash prize of USD 2.34 million (Rs19.6 crore). The first runners-up South Africa was awarded a cash-prize of USD 1.17 million (Rs 9.8 crore).

WR Chess Masters Cup 2024

 India’s Arjun Erigaisi has won the WR Chess Masters Cup 2024 title in London on 18 October 2024. He defeted Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the finals. 

 Arjun displayed great form and precision throughout the event to bag the winner’s prize of 20000 Euros and 27.84 FIDE circuit points. 

 With this victory, Arjun’s live Elo rating touched 2796, moving him closer to the coveted 2800 mark.

ISSF World Cup Final 2024

♦ India’s Vivaan Kapoor won a silver medal in men’s trap event at the ISSF World Cup Final 2024 in New Delhi on 17 October 2024. Vivaan Kapoor registered his first-ever individual medal in a senior shooting competition after shooting an impressive 44 in the men’s trap final to finish behind the People’s Republic of China’s Ying Qi (47). Turkish shotgun shooter N Tolga Tuncer took the bronze in the event with 35.

♦ While Anantjeet Singh Naruka bagged a bronze in the ISSF World Cup Final. He shot 43 for his place on the men’s skeet podium. Italy’s Tammaro Cassandro (56) and Gabriele Rossetti (53) took the gold and silver, respectively.

Indian shooter Sonam Uttam Maskar

♦ Indian shooter Sonam Uttam Maskar won the silver medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event at the ISSF World Cup 2024 final in Delhi on 15 October 2024. She excelled with a score of 252.9 to secure a podium finish. China’s Yuting Huang won the gold medal in this event with a score of 254.5, while French shooter Oceanne Muller took home the bronze. Tilottama Sen, the other Indian shooter in the final, finished sixth with a score of 167.7.

Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024

♦ India’s Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee pair clinched the historic bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan on 13 October 2024. The world No. 15 pair lost to Japan’s world No. 33 Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara with a 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-9) scoreline. 

♦ Ayhika and Sutirtha became the first all-Indian women’s doubles table tennis pair to win a medal at the Asian Championships. Gool Nasikwala won a gold medal in women’s doubles with Japan’s Yoshiko Tanaka in the inaugural edition in 1952.

Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024

♦ The Indian men’s team won the bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan on 10 October 2024. They lost in the semi-final clash against Chinese Taipei by a 3-0 margin.

♦ Sharath Kamal went down 0-3 to Lin Yun-Ju in the opening singles rubber. In the second singles match, Manav Thakkar fought hard before losing 1-3 to Kao Cheng-Jui. 

♦ This was India’s third straight medal in the men’s team event at the Asian Table Tennis Championships. India had won bronze in the previous two editions in 2023 and 2021.

Asian Table Tennis Championships

♦ The Indian women’s team won a bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on 9 October 2024. It is the first-ever medal in women’s team event for India since Asian Table Tennis Union started conducting the competition in 1972. 

♦ India lost 1-3 to Japan in the semifinals while China defeated Hong Kong 3-0 in the other semifinal. Both losing semifinalists are awarded bronze medals.

♦ Ayhika Mukherjee went down 2-3 (8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 13-11, 7-11) to Miwa Harimoto in a tightly contested opening singles. Manika Batra levelled things up with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-8) victory over Satsuki Odo. However, Mima Ito defeated Sutirtha Mukherjee 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 15-13) and Harimoto took down Batra 3-1 (11-3, 6-11, 11-2, 11-3) to seal the tie for Japan.

ISSF Junior World Championship

♦ India's Divanshi won her second individual gold in the women’s 25m standard pistol event at the ISSF Junior World Championship in Peru on 5 October 2024. She secured 564 out of 600 in the final to finish ahead of teammates Parisha Gupta (559) and Manvi Jain (557).

♦ In the corresponding men’s event, Suraj Sharma also won gold in the junior men’s standard pistol as Mukesh Nelavalli, who already has four gold medals in the competition, settled for bronze in this game.

♦ India remained at the top of the medal tally with a total of 21 medals, which included 13 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze. While Norway is in second place with 10 medals, which include 4 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze.

ISSF Junior World Championship

♦ The trio of Mukesh Nelavalli, Raajwardan Patil, and Harsimar Singh Rattha won the gold medal in the men’s 25-meter rapid-fire pistol team competition at the ISSF Junior World Championship in Peru on 4 October 2024. 

♦ The combined score of 1722-42x shot by the three Indian shooters saw them win the gold medal ahead of France (1701-44x) and Poland (1701-36x).

♦ This win also marks the 11th gold medal for India in the championship.

♦ India continued to reign supreme at the top of the medal tally with 16 medals - 11 gold, one silver and four bronze. The People’s Republic of China are second with three golds and a silver. The USA are third with 10 medals.

Khushi

Khushi won the bronze medal in the 50-metre rifle 3-position event in the World Junior Shooting Championship in Lima, Peru on 3 October 2024. In the final, Khushi finished third after shooting 447.3. 

♦ Synnoeve Berg (458.4-Norway) and Caroline Finnestad Lund (458.4-Norway) bagged gold and silver medals respectively.

ISSF Junior World Championship in Lima

♦ India added 5 more Gold medals to its tally in the ISSF Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru on 2 October 2024. 

♦ Divanshi bagged a Gold in the women’s 25m pistol. She defeated Italy’s Cristina Magnani by two points in the final with a score of 35. France’s Heloise Fourre was third. 

♦ It was a double-gold for Divanshi as she combined with India’s Tejaswini and Vibhuti Bhatia, to win the junior women’s 25m pistol team gold ahead of The Czech Republic and Germany.

♦ Mukesh Nelavalli won a gold medal in the junior men’s 25m pistol event with a score of 585. 

♦ In the team event, Mukesh Nelavalli, Suraj Sharma alongside Pradhyumn Singh, clinched gold, narrowly edging out Poland by three points.

♦ India secured its fifth gold in the junior men’s 50m rifle team event, with Shourya Saini, Vedant Nitin Waghmare, and Parikshit Singh Brar scoring a combined 1753 points.

♦ At the ISSF junior world championship, India is leading the tally with 14 medals including 10 Gold, a Silver and three Bronze. The USA is at the second place, while Italy holds the third spot.

Kho Kho World Cup

♦ The first-ever Kho Kho World Cup is scheduled to take place in India in 2025. The Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI), in partnership with the International Kho Kho Federation, officially announced this on 2 October 2024. This tournament will feature 24 countries across six continents, showcasing 16 teams in both men’s and women’s categories.

♦ From starting in the mud, the sport has gone to the mat and has a global presence with 54 countries playing it across the world.

ISSF Junior World Championship 2024

Indian shooter Parth Rakesh Mane won double gold medals at the ISSF Junior World Championship 2024 on October 1. He clinched the gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle held in Lima, Peru. Parth also won a team victory alongside Ajay Malik and Abhinav Shaw in the men’s 10m air rifle team event with a total score of 1883.5. India surpassed the USA (1877.6) and Germany (1873.9). 

♦ The women’s 10m air rifle team also struck gold, with Gautami Bhanot, Sambhavi Kshirsagar, and Anoushka Thakur taking the top spot.
