This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 24 May 24, 2017. September 30 was chosen to commemorate these experts because it coincides with the feast day of St. Jerome, who is credited with translating the Bible. He was a priest from northeastern Italy who translated the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament into Latin.

♦ On September 28, 1827, the 8th Company of the Golandaz Battalion, Bombay Foot Artillery, was established as 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery. At present, it is a component of the 57 Field Regiment. Consequently, September 28 is designated as "Gunners Day."
♦ The Regiment of Artillery, one of the largest arms of the Indian Army, proved its mettle also during the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971, and 1999.
