Teachers Day

♦ Teachers Day is celebrated every year in India on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. It happens since 1962. He was born on 1888 and died on 17 April 1975. 

♦ Radhakrishnan served as first Vice President (1952 - 62) and second President (1962 - 67) of India.

♦ He got Bharat Ratna in 1954 and Templeton Prize in 1975.

♦ World Teachers’ Day is observed every year on October 5th. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1994.

♦ 2024 theme: “Empowering Educators for a Sustainable Future.”

International Translation Day

International Translation Day is observed every year on 30 September to protection and promotion of translation as an art, protect copyright and related rights. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)  on 24 May 24, 2017. September 30 was chosen to commemorate these experts because it coincides with the feast day of St. Jerome, who is credited with translating the Bible. He was a priest from northeastern Italy who translated the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament into Latin.

World Heart Day

 World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

 This day was established by the World Heart Federation (WHF), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999. 

 The first World Heart Day celebration took place on 24 September 2000. In 2011, the WHF decided to fix the date to September 29 each year to standardise the event and create greater global visibility.

 2024 theme: "Use Heart for Action".

International Day for Universal Access to Information

 The International Day for Universal Access to Information is celebrated on September 28 across the globe.  

 Recognising the significance of access to information, the 74th UN General Assembly proclaimed 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level in October 2019.

 The day was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015, following the adoption of a resolution declaring 28 September of every year as International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI).

 2024 theme: 'Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector'.

Gunners Day

♦ The Indian Army is celebrated the 198th Gunners Day on 28 September 2024.

♦ The day is observed to commemorate the raising of the first Indian Artillery Unit, namely, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery in 1827. 

♦ The Battle of Adoni in 1368 is the first known instance of artillery in India.

♦ The Bahmani kings of the Deccan, led by Mohammed Shah Bahmani, employed a train of artillery to subdue the Vijay Nagar king.

♦ On September 28, 1827, the 8th Company of the Golandaz Battalion, Bombay Foot Artillery, was established as 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery. At present, it is a component of the 57 Field Regiment. Consequently, September 28 is designated as "Gunners Day." 

♦ The Regiment of Artillery, one of the largest arms of the Indian Army, proved its mettle also during the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971, and 1999.

♦ After the Kargil conflict, artillery has acquired further prominence, and with its vast array of weapons, it is acknowledged as a significant ‘Arm of Decision’.

World Environmental Health Day

♦ World Environmental Health Day is celebrated every year on September 26 to raise awareness about the critical connection between human health and environment. This day was founded by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) in 2011 to focus on the importance of caring for the health of our environment.

♦ 2024 theme: 'Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.'

World Tourism Day

♦ World Tourism Day is observed every year on September 27. This day was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980 to honour the global influence of travel and to increase public understanding of its importance on social, cultural, and economic development.

The World Pharmacists Day

♦ The World Pharmacists Day is observed every year on September 25 to recognise and celebrate the crucial role that pharmacists play in building healthier communities everywhere. This day was organised by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). World Pharmacists Day marks the anniversary of the inception of FIP in 1912 and was adopted by the FIP Council in 2009.

Antyodaya Diwas

♦ Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated every year in India on September 25 to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. This day was first observed in 2014. In the Indian context, ‘Antyodaya’ means that we have to ensure the rise and development of the last person in society. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on 25 September 1916 in Dhankia, Rajasthan.

International Sign Language Day

♦ International Sign Language Day (International Day of Sign Languages) is observed every year on September 23 to raise awareness about the rights of the deaf community and other sign language users. This day was established in 2017 by the UN General Assembly and was celebrated for the first time in 2018. The choice of 23 September commemorates the date that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was established in 1951.

♦ 2024 Theme: “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”.

♦ International Day of Peace (World Peace Day) is observed every year on 21 September. This day was established by United Nations General Assmbly in 1981. 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.

♦ 2024 theme: 'Actions for Peace: Our Commitment to the #GlobalGoals'.

World Cleanup Day

World Cleanup Day is celebrated every year on September 20. It is a global social program aimed at tackling the problems associated with marine debris and waste management. On 8 December 2023, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution that 20 September was World Cleanup Day.

World Patient Safety Day

♦ World Patient Safety Day is observed every year on September 17 to raise global awareness about patient safety.

♦ This day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in May 2019.

♦ World Patient Safety Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns observed by the WHO. 

♦ 2024 theme:  “Get it right, make it safe!”.

World Ozone Day

♦ World Ozone Day is observed every year on 16 September to spread awareness among people about the depletion of Ozone Layer and search possible solutions to preserve it.

♦ In 1994, the UN General Assembly declared 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer. 

♦ 2024 theme: 'Advancing Climate Action.'

National Engineers Day

National Engineer's Day is observed every year on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. It was first celebrated in 1968. Sri Lanka and Tanzania also celebrated September 15th as Engineers Day. 

♦ Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village in Karnataka.

♦ 2024 theme: "Innovating for a Sustainable Future".

Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is observed every year on September 14 to promote the language and its usage across the nation. Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and the third most spoken language worldwide. 

♦ On 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India officially recognized Hindi as one of the country’s official languages. The first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to observe September 14 as Hindi Diwas. The celebration of Hindi Diwas officially started in 1953. 

♦ World Hindi Day is celebrated all over the world on 10 January, thus Hindi Day is celebrated twice in India.

National Forest Martyrs Day

The National Forest Martyrs Day is observed every year on September 11 in India to honouring the countless activists who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of India's jungles, forests, and wildlife. This day was established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2013.

International Day of Police Cooperation

♦ International Day of Police Cooperation is observed every year on September 7. This was marked for the first time in 2023. This day recognizes the essential work of the world’s law enforcement community in global security. It was designated in the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Police Cooperation adopted on 16 December 2022.

♦ Coinciding with the centenary of INTERPOL, as the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC) was created on September 7, 1923, the United Nations marked the International Day of Police Cooperation for the first time in 2023.

The International Day of Charity

♦ The International Day of Charity is observed every year on September 5 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her efforts in combating poverty and distress, which are also threats to peace. The main objective of this day is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charitable activities around the globe involving individuals, charities, philanthropic groups and volunteers at local, National, regional, and International levels.

♦ In 2012, the U.N. General Assembly officially designated September 5 as the International Day of Charity.
