National Education Day

National Education Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to honour the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a prominent visionary, freedom fighter, scholar, and the first Education Minister of Independent India.

This day was established by the Union Ministry of Education in 2008. 

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born on November 11th 1888 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare

The Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare is observed every year on November 30 across the globe.

During the last day of the United Nations’ 10th session of the conference of the state parties, on November 11, 2005, the members of the UN officially recognised the Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare, following a suggestion by Rogelio Pfirter, Director-General of the Secretariat.

The day was officially recognised by the United Nations (UN) and has been celebrated since 2005.

Solidarity with the Palestinian People

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed every year on November 29 to mark the anniversary of Partition Plan or the resolution 181 (II), intended to establish an Arab State and a Jewish State.

In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)), United Nations mentioned.

National Constitution Day

National Constitution Day is celebrated every year on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

Indian Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949 and its coming into effect on January 26, 1950.

With an aim to promote constitutional values among people, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment announced on November 19, 2015 that the government would celebrate November 26 every year as Constitution Day.

National Milk Day

National Milk Day is observed annually in India on November 26 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the architect of the ‘White Revolution’.

He is known as the ‘Father of the White Revolution in India.’ The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Indian Dairy Association (IDA), and 22 state-level milk federations decided to celebrate Dr Verghese Kurien’s birth anniversary as National Milk Day on November 26, 2014.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed every year on 25 November to create awareness about the violence against women and girls.

This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). On 20 December 1993, the General Assembly adopts the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women paving the path towards eradicating violence against women and girls worldwide.

Finally, on 7 February 2000, the General Assembly officially designating 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Universal Childrens Day

Universal Children’s Day was observed every year on 20 November to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare.

This day was first established in 1954. The date 20 November marks the day on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.

♦ In India, Children's Day is observed on November 14 to honor India's First PM Jawaharlal Nehru's commitment to children's well-being.

International Students Day

♦ International Students’ Day is celebrated every year on November 17 to ensure education is available for all students and promote students’ rights and the importance of education. November 17 was chosen as International Students’ Day due to the events that unfolded in Prague during World War II. Nine students were executed without trial in concentration camps on November 17, 1939. This day was first held at London’s International Students’ Council in 1941.

The International Day for Tolerance

♦ The International Day for Tolerance is observed every year on November 16 to promote mutual understanding among various cultures and enhance tolerance among individuals. In 1994, UNESCO marked the 125th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth paving the way for the proclamation of 16 November as the International Day for Tolerance by the UN. This day was first observed in 1996. 

♦ 2024 theme: ‘Promoting Respect and Understanding Worldwide.’

National Press Day

♦ National Press Day is observed every year on November 16 to honour free and responsible press in the democratic society of India. The Press Council of India (PCI) was first constituted on 4th July 1966 as an autonomous, statutory, quasi-judicial body, with Justice JR Mudholkar, then a Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chairman. PCI began functioning on 16th November 1966, that's why this day was chosen as National Press Day. 

♦ 2024 theme: “Changing Nature of the Press.”

Childrens Day

Children's Day is observed every year on November 14 to honour the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister.

This day is also celebrated in homes by parents with their children with love and affection. The Indian government officially declared November 14 to be celebrated as Children's Day in 1957.

Nehru was born on November 14, 1889. He also established the Children's Film Society India in 1955 to create indigenous cinema exclusively for kids.

World Pneumonia Day

World Pneumonia Day is observed every year on November 12 to create awareness and educate people to combat pneumonia.

This day was first observed in 2009, under the 'Stop Pneumonia' initiative.

♦ World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated every year on November 10 to highlighting the role of science in society and the need to engage people to actively debate on more scientific issues.

♦ This day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001. 

♦ 2024 theme: “Why Science Matters: Engaging Minds and Empowering Futures.”

World Radiography Day

World Radiography Day is observed every year on November 8 to commemorate the historic discovery of X-radiation by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.

This discovery led to the first radiographic image of his wife's hand and eventually won him the first Nobel Prize in 1901.

This day recognises and honours the pivotal role of radiographers in the modern healthcare system.

National Cancer Awareness Day

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed every year in India on November 7 to create public awareness about early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer.

This day was first celebrated in 2014. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death globally.

In 2022, there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths.

Day for the Prevention of Exploitation

International Day for the Prevention of Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is observed every year on November 6.  

This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. 

This day can be traced back to the early 1970s when global concerns about the ecological effects of war started to grow.

The use of herbicides (like Agent Orange during the Vietnam War) and the deliberate destruction of oil wells in the 1990s Gulf War highlighted that environmental damages spawned by armed conflicts should be mitigated.

World Tsunami Awareness Day

World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed every year on November 5. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.

The assembly chose November 5 as a Tsunami awareness day as it holds deep historical significance, inspired by the Japanese story of the “Inamura-no-hi”, or the “burning of the rice sheaves” incident.
