Special Days

International Day of Non-Violence

♦ Every year, October 2 is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence across the world. The date holds a special connection with India as it marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, whose philosophy of non-violence, or Ahimsa, became central to his approach to social and political change. In India, October 2 is also celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti.

♦ The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Non-Violence through Resolution 61/271, adopted on June 15, 2007. The resolution decided that the International Day of Non-Violence would be observed on October 2 every year. It also called for the message of non-violence to be spread through education and public awareness.

World Teachers Day

World Teachers’ Day is observed every year on October 5 to recognise the role of teachers in education and draw attention to the professional conditions that shape their work. In 2026, the day marks 60 years of the 1966 ILO-UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers. October 5 commemorates the adoption of the recommendation in 1966 at a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
