International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

♦ The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17 to raising awareness about the ongoing challenges of poverty worldwide.

♦ On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.

♦ Through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, the General Assembly declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and invited all States to devote the Day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution.

World Standards Day

♦ World Standards Day is observed annually on October 14 to celebrate the crucial contribution of technical standards to our globalized, modern world.

♦ World Standards Day traces its origins to 1946, when delegates from 25 countries met in London and decided to establish an international organisation dedicated to promoting standardisation.

♦ The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) was formed the following year, but it wasn’t until 1970 that the first World Standards Day was officially celebrated.

♦ 2025 theme: "Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals".

National Post Day

♦ National Post Day is celebrated across India on October 10 to honor the Indian Postal Department (India Post) for its remarkable contribution to communication, public service delivery, and rural empowerment.

♦ Postal service was introduced in India by the British.

♦ It was founded in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie. Currently, it functions under the Ministry of Communications and is the most widely distributed postal system in the world.

♦ India has 23 postal circles and 9 postal zones including Army Post Office.

♦ Post offices in Indian follow a 6-digit PIN Code system, which was introduced in India in 1972.

Indian Air Force Day

♦ Indian Air Force Day is observed annually on October 8, commemorating the establishment of one of the nation’s most respected armed forces organisations.

♦ Founded in 1932, the Indian Air Force plays a vital role in securing the country’s airspace and protecting India’s national and humanitarian interests against all threats.

♦ The day serves as a tribute to the unwavering dedication and passion of IAF personnel, while also highlighting the many technological advancements achieved over the years.

World Teachers Day

♦ World Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on October 5 to honour teachers’ crucial role to build the future of a country.

♦ The day is also to reflect on the support they need to fully exercise their skills and vocation.

♦ It provides an opportunity to rethink the global trajectory of the teaching profession and the systems that sustain it.

♦ The day marks the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers, which outlines international benchmarks on teachers' rights, responsibilities, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

♦ Complementing this, the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel extends similar standards to university-level educators.

♦ World Teachers' Day has been celebrated since 1994.
