He won his party's leadership contest on 27 September 2024. Among the nine candidates vying for the position, Ishiba secured 215 votes, defeating Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi by a narrow margin of 21 votes. He will replace current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

He will succeed Air Marshal AP Singh, who is set to become the Chief of Air Staff. Dharkar will be assuming his new role after the new Air Force chief takes over on September 30.

♦ Yechury served as a Rajya Sabha MP for 12 years, from 2005 to 2017.
♦ He assumed the role of the fifth general secretary of the CPI(M) at the 21st party congress in Visakhapatnam on 19 April 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat and was re-elected to the position in 2018 and 2022.
♦ Yechury’s political career began in 1974 with his involvement in the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). In 1984, he was elected to the Central Committee of the CPI(M) as a permanent invitee. By 1992, he had ascended to the Politburo, a role he held for over thirty years.
♦ Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu inaugurated the 2nd Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation (APMC) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on 11 September 2024. The event drew representatives from 29 countries and key aviation figures.
