Ashmita Chaliha

♦ India’s Ashmita Chaliha won the Korea Masters Super 300 badminton title in Asan on 9 August 2026. She defeated fourth seed Han Qian Xi of China in the women's singles final.

♦ The victory also marked Ashmita Chaliha’s maiden BWF World Tour title and came on her first appearance in a final. The Indian badminton player had also reached the semi-finals of the Macau Open in June 2026.

♦ She joins an elite group of Indian women’s singles players to have won BWF Super 300 or higher-level badminton titles, alongside Olympic medallists Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, as well as Devika Sihag and Tanvi Sharma.

Basant Kumar Meghwal

♦ Indian high jumper Basant Kumar Meghwal created history by winning the silver medal in the men's high jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on 9 August 2026. The 19-year-old from Anupgarh in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district produced a lifetime-best effort of 2.21m to secure India's second medal of the championships and become the country's first high jumper to win a medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

♦ Algeria's Younes Ayachi won the gold, while Great Britain's Otis Poole took the bronze. All the three medallists could only clear 2.21m but failed all their three attempts to sail over 2.24m. The positions were thus decided on countback based on the number of attempts to clear the previous height.

World Athletics U20 Championships

♦ Ashish Yadav won a silver medal in men's javelin throw at the World Athletics U20 Championships, becoming only the second Indian to win a medal in the event at the global junior competition — 10 years after Neeraj Chopra's historic triumph. Yadav’s third round throw of 74.09m fetched him the silver medal. 

♦ South Africa's Jan-Hendrik Heymans took the gold with an enormous 80.50m throw on his sixth and final attempt, a mark that also became the season's U20 world-leading effort. India's other finalist, T Dharanidharan, finished sixth with a best throw of 72.35m.

♦ Chopra had won gold and set the still-standing world junior record of 86.48m in the 2016 edition in Poland.

Mohammed Ashfaq

At the World Athletics Under 20 Championships, India’s Mohammed Ashfaq broke the Under 20 national record in Eugene, United States on 7 August 2026. With this win, Ashfaq paved his way to qualify for the men’s 400 metre semifinals. Ashfaq clocked 45.81 seconds to finish second behind USA’s Jayden DeLeon in the first round heat 5 and fourth overall to make it to the semifinals.

Praggnanandhaa

Indian grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has clinched the Grand Chess Tour St. Louis Rapid and Blitz title in the United States on 7 August 2026. He secured the championship after drawing against Uzbekistan’s Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov in the penultimate round, finishing the tournament with 23 points out of a possible 35.

• Earlier in 2026 June, Praggnanandhaa scripted history by claiming the Norway Chess 2026 crown in Oslo after defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the tenth and final round.

India concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026

♦ India concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — to finish fourth in the overall standings despite competing in a significantly reduced programme that excluded medal-rich sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.

♦ The Indian contingent of 122 athletes competed across eight able-bodied sports and five integrated para sports from July 23 to August 2. 

♦ Australia topped the medal table with 171 medals, followed by England (110) and Canada (62), while India and hosts Scotland both won 39 medals, with India taking fourth place by virtue of a higher silver-medal count.

♦ With the Glasgow edition complete, India’s overall Commonwealth Games tally rose to 603 medals from 19 appearances, making it the fourth-most successful nation in Games history behind Australia, England and Canada.

Commonwealth Games 2026: Indian medal winners

2026 Commonwealth Games

♦ Indian boxers won seven gold and three silver medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on 1 August 2026. No country has won more gold medals in boxing at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games. Previously, England had won six golds twice (London 1934 and Gold Coast 2018), while Canada matched the tally at Edinburgh 1986. 

♦ India’s seven gold medals came through Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (women’s 51kg), Priya Ghanghas (women’s 60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (women’s 70kg), Sachin Siwach (men’s 60kg) and Ankush Panghal (men’s 80kg). 

♦ The three silver medals were won by Jadumani Singh (men’s 55kg), Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg) and Narender Berwal (men’s 90+kg).
