♦ He served in that role until his elevation as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.
♦ Justice Kant later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 5, 2018, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019.

♦ The milestone, reached as of September 30, 2025, marks a major step toward India’s vision of a clean, secure, and self-reliant energy future.
♦ According to official data, India’s installed capacity now stands at 500.89 GW, of which 256.09 GW (over 51%) comes from non-fossil fuel sources – including renewable energy, large hydro, and nuclear – while 244.80 GW (about 49%) comes from fossil-fuel-based generation.
♦ During the first half of FY 2025–26 (April–September 2025), India added 28 GW of non-fossil capacity, compared to just 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel capacity, highlighting the accelerating pace of clean energy deployment.
♦ Within renewables, solar power leads with 127.33 GW, followed by wind energy at 53.12 GW, underlining India’s emergence as one of the world’s largest renewable energy markets.

♦ The Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, notified on April 15, 2025, introduced a total of 19 amendments across five major legislations – the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, Banking Regulation Act, 1949, State Bank of India Act, 1955, and the Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Acts of 1970 and 1980.
♦ As per the latest notification, the provisions contained in Sections 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the Amendment Act – which deal with nomination facilities for deposit accounts, articles kept in safe custody, and safety lockers – will come into force on November 1, 2025.
♦ Key Features of the Nomination Provisions:
♦ The new provisions are designed to give depositors greater flexibility and transparency in managing their nominations:
♦ Multiple Nominations: Customers can nominate up to four persons, either simultaneously or successively, to simplify claim settlements.
♦ Deposit Accounts: Depositors can choose between simultaneous or successive nominations.
♦ Safe Custody and Lockers: For these facilities, only successive nominations are allowed.
♦ Simultaneous Nomination: Depositors may assign up to four nominees and specify the percentage share of entitlement for each, ensuring the total equals 100 per cent.
♦ Successive Nomination: Up to four nominees can be listed in order of priority; the next nominee becomes operative only upon the death of the previous one, ensuring clarity in succession.
Posted Date: October 23, 2025♦ The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on 23 October 2025 approved a series of capital acquisition proposals worth around RS.79,000 crore aimed at enhancing the operational and combat capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
♦ According to Defence Ministry, the approvals include key procurements for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, covering advanced weapon systems, platforms, and support equipment designed to strengthen India’s defence preparedness across multiple domains.
♦ For the Indian Army, the DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of the Nag Missile System (Tracked) Mk-II (NAMIS), Ground-Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES), and High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) equipped with material-handling cranes.
♦ The NAMIS (Tracked) system will significantly enhance the Army’s ability to neutralise enemy armoured vehicles, bunkers, and fortifications, while the GBMES will provide round-the-clock electronic intelligence on enemy emitters.
♦ The induction of HMVs is expected to improve logistic support for troops across varied terrains.
♦ For the Indian Navy, approvals were granted for the acquisition of Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), 30mm Naval Surface Guns (NSGs), Advanced Lightweight Torpedoes (ALWTs), Electro-Optical Infrared Search and Track Systems, and Smart Ammunition for 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mounts.

♦ This excludes power generated by large hydro power facilities.
♦ The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said that the government has set an ambitious goal of achieving 500 gigawatts of non-fossil capacity by 2030.
♦ In the current year (2025), Central Renewable Energy Implementing agencies have done bids for 5.6 gigawatts, while State agencies have done bids for 3.5 megawatts.
♦ Additionally, Commercial and Industrial Consumers are likely to add nearly six gigawatts of renewable energy capacity this year.

♦ The country has also maintained its 3rd position worldwide in terms of annual forest area gain, reaffirming its progress in sustainable forest management and ecological balance. In the previous assessment, India was ranked 10th.
♦ GFRA, based on official national data, has put India’s forest cover at 72.7 million hectares in 2025, accounting for roughly 2 percent of the world forest area.
♦ According to India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, the country’s forest cover stands at 71.5 million hectares.
♦ Globally, forests cover 4.14 billion hectares which accounts for nearly one-third (32 percent) of the global land area, equivalent to 0.5 hectares per person.
♦ Nearly half of the world’s forests are located in the tropics.
♦ Globally, Russia has the highest forest cover (832.6 million hectares) followed by Brazil (486 million hectares), Canada (368.8 million hectares), the USA (308.8 million hectares), China (227 million hectares), Congo (139 million hectares), Australia (133.5 million hectares), Indonesia (96 million hectares), India (72.7 million hectares) and Peru (67 million hectares). In fact, more than half (54%) of the total world forest area is concentrated in just five countries — Russia, Brazil, Canada, the United States and China.
♦ In terms of forest expansion, China recorded the highest annual net gain in forest area between 2015 and 2025 at 1.69 million hectares per year, followed by Russia (9,42,000 hectares), India (1,91,000 hectares), Türkiye (1,18,000 ha), Australia (1,05,000 ha), France (95,900 ha), Indonesia (94,100 ha), South Africa (87,600 ha), Canada (82,500 ha) and Vietnam (72,800 ha).
♦ The assessment report shows that Asia is the only region to record an increase in forest area between 1990 and 2025, led by gains in China and India.
♦ It shows that 91 countries reported agroforestry of 55.4 million ha in 2025. The majority (39.3 million ha) of this area is in Asia, mostly South and Southeast Asia, with India and Indonesia accounting for almost 100% of the regional total and for 70% of the global total.

♦ Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, said the molecule is the first to be entirely conceptualised, developed and clinically validated in India.

♦ Under the SMRI framework, States have been divided into three categories based on their mineral endowment.

♦ Backed by several flagship schemes, the system is undergoing continuous reform to shift from food availability to nutritional equity.
♦ Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, beneficiaries are entitled to subsidized — now free — food grains.
♦ Each Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) household receives 35 kg of grains monthly, while individuals in Priority Households (PHH) are allotted 5 kg per month. Since January 2023, food grains under NFSA have been provided free of cost.
♦ The initiative has been extended until 2028, with a total financial outlay of Rs.11.80 lakh crore, entirely funded by the Centre.
♦ To increase production and improve nutritional quality, the government restructured the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) into the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM) in 2024–25.

♦ The understanding was reached during a meeting held in New Delhi between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Vice President of Brazil and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services Geraldo Alckmin.
♦ The two leaders welcomed the mutual interest of India and MERCOSUR member states in deepening the existing Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).
♦ Recalling the original Framework Agreement signed on 17 June 2003 to strengthen economic ties, they agreed to take concrete steps to broaden the agreement’s scope.
♦ As part of the new roadmap, both sides decided that:
♦ The expansion of the pact should be substantial, ensuring a significant share of bilateral trade benefits from tariff preferences.
♦ It should address both tariff and non-tariff issues, including broader economic partnership areas.
♦ There will be active engagement with private sector stakeholders to support negotiations.
♦ A technical dialogue will be launched soon, including an early meeting of the Joint Administration Committee established under Article 23 of the PTA, to define the scope of the expansion.

♦ Demographic and structural shifts could create a workforce shortfall of more than 4.3 crore people if left unaddressed, says the report, 'Future of the Travel and Tourism Workforce', which focused on 20 economies.
♦ The Council works with governments on issues of the travel and tourism industry, and is the global authority on the economic and social contribution of the sector.
♦ The report, released at the 25th WTTC Global Summit in Rome recently, is based on extensive global research, including a large-scale survey of business leaders and in-depth interviews with the tourism body's members and other key stakeholders.
♦ By 2035, global demand for workers in travel and tourism will outpace supply by more than 4.3 crore people, leaving labour availability 16 percent below required levels, it said.
♦ The report said labour challenges will affect all the 20 major economies analysed, with the largest absolute shortfalls forecast in China (1.69 crore), India (1.1 crore), and the European Union (64 lakh).

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled various youth-focused initiatives worth over Rs.62,000 crore on 4 October 2025.
♦ He launched PM-SETU (Prime Minister's Skill and Employment Transformation through Advanced ITIs), a centrally sponsored scheme with an investment of Rs.60,000 crore.
♦ Under this scheme, 1,000 government ITIs across the country will be upgraded to a hub-and-spoke model, comprising 200 hub ITIs and 800 spoke ITIs.
♦ Each hub will be connected to an average of four spokes, creating clusters equipped with advanced infrastructure, modern trades, digital learning systems, and incubation facilities.

♦ The H125 helicopter will help develop new civil and para-public market segments and also meet the Indian armed forces' requirement for a light multi-role helicopter, especially on the Himalayan frontiers, says Airbus.
♦ The H125 final assembly line is the second Airbus aircraft assembly plant Tata Advanced Systems is building in India, after the C295 military aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara.

♦ The sharpest hike has been announced for safflower, with an increase of Rs.600 per quintal, followed by lentil (masur) at Rs.300 per quintal.
♦ The MSP of rapeseed and mustard has been raised by Rs.250 per quintal, gram by Rs.225 per quintal, barley by Rs.170 per quintal, and wheat by Rs.160 per quintal.
♦ The Union Cabinet also approved the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, a landmark initiative aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing India’s dependence on imports.
♦ The six-year programme, running from 2025-26 to 2030-31, carries a financial outlay of Rs.11,440 crore.
♦ The Cabinet has approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the civil sector across the country.
♦ The total estimated cost for setting up these 57 KVs is approximately Rs.5,862.55 crore over nine years from 2026-27.
